It’s fall and the weather is fast changing from the heat of the summer to the cool, crisp air that is fall. Fall is a great time to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. And what better way to enjoy a nice fall day than to visit a local playground or park with the family?
Sadly, not all families find an afternoon at a local park or playground an easy outing. Families with children with disabilities and mobility issues face special challenges when bringing their children to a park or playground. Many such families need accessible features for their children to get out and fully enjoy their time outside.

Delaware has several accessible parks and a specially designed playground that addresses the needs of children with mobility issues. These places have incorporated features or activities that might help a child with disabilities and/or mobility issues to thoroughly enjoy an afternoon at the park:

Can-Do Playground, Wilmington – This park encompasses 23,000 square feet of play space that promotes sensory, physical and creative growth.

Trap Pond State Park, Laurel – This park includes accessible camping cabins and sites, playground areas, and an accessible Nature Center.

Carousel Park and Bellevue State Park, Wilmington – Both parks offer therapeutic riding opportunities for children and adults with special needs  –  TRAC (Therapeutic Riding At Carousel) at Carousel, and Wellspring Farm Equestrian Center at Bellevue. Bellevue also has specially designed swings for children with mobility issues.

Cape Henlopen State Park , Lewes – Beach wheel chairs are available at Cape Henlopen which allow those with mobility issues to reach the surf.
